Leatherfest 1990

Reprinted from NLA:SD Quarterly Restraint

This year's Leatherfest was the biggest and best ever, commencing with a kickoff kegger at the Flame on Wednesday, March 7, and attracting attention from as far away as London, England.

The San Diego Leathermen's Awards Banquet, held at Clarke's Flamingo Bistro on March 8 was an extra bonus. Few noticed that the banquet was not officially part of Leatherfest '90, it seemed to be part of the whole weekend and certainly was in the spirit of the NLA:SD's annual leather event.

Awards at the banquet went to Ed Winant, NLA/SD, John Kleppinger and Fred Acheson. A special award was given to Meyers Jacobsen. Good food, pleasant companionship, and a stripper all rounded out the nights festivities.

The registration kegger at Wolfs the following evening was also very festive. The bar was packed like only Wolfs can be on a special night.

Saturday's highlights included an art show featuring Leather artists -- some coming from as far away as Denver -- of really top quality. Also on Saturday were workshops, a poetry/fiction reading and much more.

Saturday night BULC hosted a Black Party which included fantasies by Brian Dawson and Taurus Webster. This was the single most successful event of the weekend, drawing crowds which had to line up outside and wait to get in.

While many attended an S&M Basics workshop at Wolfs, CCMC and Knights on Iron hosted a Bay Area Fun Run on Sunday. The route that day included the Silver Strand, Coronado Island and Mount Soledad before ending at the Flame for an afternoon beer bust ($3 bought all the beer or soft drinks you could put down).

Later that day, also at the Flame, a variety show presented performances by The Finest City Freedom Band's Freedom Swing, a big band group; Shan Carr; Ms. Southern California Leather, Gabrielle Antolovich; and a Brian Dawson fantasy.

After costs and expenses were paid the event brought in enough to present three checks of $452 to each of the named beneficiaries of the event: Auntie Helen's Fluff 'N Fold, Aids Hospice, and the Aids Project's Client Recreational Fund.

Leatherfest is an annual event of the NLA:SD. The event is intended as a fundraiser to generate needed funds to benefit San Diego's Leather Community and various charitable organizations in accordance with the goals and purpose of the National Leather Association.

$25 Package included tickets to all events, T-shirt and Poster.
Per January 1991 NLA First Link article, Leatherfest 90 brought in about $1800 for San Diego AIDS service agencies
